EEOC Reports job bias charges hit record high in FY 2008

In what may be a sign of the times, the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) reported that the levels of bias charges filed in FY 2008 were up 15%  over the previous year. The 95,000 bias charges filed in 2008 showed increases in all major categories with age and retaliation charges seeing the largest increase. We talked about retaliation in Tuesday’s posting about the TSA, and age discrimination has been a rising problem in this country for several decades, but as the economy worsens we’re seeing more reports of bosses behaving badly. From shutting their doors with only a text message to alert employees, to refusing to turn the heat on in the middle of winter, it appears that some employers, realizing that people tend to stay put when the economy is tanking, are taking more liberties with employees than ever before, betting that employees, afraid of losing their jobs, won’t complain. The problem with that logic is that the economy will get better. And when it does, these employees will leave and file their own EEOC complaints on the way out.
